10 tips for your Bali trip

  • Do expect for it to take a long time getting around!
The traffic is not the best in Bali. There are no traffic lights, motorbikes all over the place and you drive as you please. It took us 45 min to drive 15 km!
  • Ubud is worth a visit!
Ubud has a lot of amazing things to see, do and eat and it’s a great place to stay for day trips around the island. It was one of my favorite cities we visited in Bali
  • It’s very cheap in Bali!
Coming from an expensive country like Denmark, Bali was extremely cheap! We never gave more than 30 euros for a 2×3 course meal and 4 drinks (non alcoholic), an hour massage only cost 13 euros, a private driver only cost 40 euros for an entire day and a private boat and snorkel tour on Gili Air only cost 40 euros for the two of us! And it’s possible to do way cheaper than we did!
  • The Gili Islands are worth a visit!
We spent a couple of days on Gili Air and it was the best days of our trip! There’s a very calm island atmosphere, no cars, beautiful beaches and it’s an amazing place to go snorkel! I was afraid we would get restless or we had booked to many days, but I could easily have stayed there for two weeks!
  • Skip Nusa Penida!
and take a couple of extra days on the Gili islands. I was very disapointed in Nusa Penida. Yes, it a beautiful island with some amazing nature, BUT it’s so crowded, the attractions are far from each other and the roads are so bad so I’d recommend spending your time on something else.
  • Do remember mosquito spray!
There’s a lot of mosquitos in Bali and I got stung quite a few times despite having used mosquito spray
  • Be aware of Bali belly!
Both of us got Bali belly while we were on Bali (I even got it twice) and I never felt so bad! I honestly don’t have any advice on how to avoid Bali belly because I thought we pretty careful with what we eating and we still got sick
  • You have to wear a sarong when visiting temples
It’s not enough to cover your shoulders and your knees, you also have to wear a sarong.
  • You don’t have to buy your own sarong
Fortunately all the places we visited had sarongs you could rent/borrow so you don’t have to buy one one your own (I think you should though! They are beautiful and really affordable)
  • It’s very normal to bargain!
I was quite surprised at how much you bargain in Bali and how low you can get the price! BUT I also think it’s important to remember that 5 euros mean a lot more to them than they do to us!
