25 things to see, do and eat in Germany
Germany is a really underrated country in my opinion! It’s often used as a travel through country and I don’t think a lot of people actually stop to see what the country has to offer! Germany is a beautilful country with fairytale castles, amazing nature and romantic towns.
We spent a couple of weeks driving around Germany and here’s my bucket list for what to see, do and eat in Germany!
1. Visit Rapunzelturm
If you are a fan of Rapunzel or disney pincesses in general Rapunzelturm is a must to visit! The castle has a tower looking like the tower Rapunzel lived in. You can even see her hair hanging from the tower.
The castle lies with view over the beautiful nature. You can have lunch at the castle and you can even stay for a night. We spent a couple of hours there enjoying the surrondings and the view. It was the perfect little stop on our roadtrip!
2. Spend the day at Eltz castle
Eltz castle (or Burg Eltz) looks like a castle taken straight out of a fairytale! The castle is set in the middle of the forest, deep down in a valley sorrunded by big beautiful trees. You are able to take a tour of the castle, take a stroll in the surronding nature and have a lunch at the castle. It’s not the best food, but the view makes up for it!
Make sure to come early as it gets crowded!
3. Visit the beautiful town Cochem
Cochem is a beuatiful city located by the Rhine. Take a stroll through the streets of Cochem, look at the shops, have lunch at one of their cafés and enjoy the view of the Rhine and Cochem castle. It’s actually possible to visit Cochem castle and get a tour. We did not have the time, but I think it would have been a fun experience!
Cochem would also make a great base for visiting other cities along the Rhine.
4. Visit the small town Boppard by the Rhine
Boppard is a small and beautiful town located by the Rhine. It’s not as big and touristy as Cochem so you’ll experince less people in Boppard. We spent a couple of days in Boppard and it was the perfect base for exploring the Rhine and the nearby cities!
A must thing to do in Boppard is having dinner at one of the restaurants with view of the Rhine!
Fun fact: My husband actually proposed to me in this charming town!
5. Take a ride on the Boppard chairlift
In Boppard it’s possible to take a chairlift up the hill and get a beautiful view over the Rhine and the surronding nature. The ride takes around 20 minutes and you can enjoy the beautiful view meanwhile. It was a quite windy the day we took the chairlift so I thought it was pretty scary, but if the wind had been calm I’m sure it would have been more enjoyable!
At the top you get a beautiful view over the Rhine! There are diffenrent hikes you can do at top too, but we just stayed and enjoyed the view for a while and went back down.
The chairlift was closed when we had to get back down due to the wind so we had to hike down which was also a little scary as I’m afraid of heights, but the views was beautiful!
6. Take a boat ride on the Rhine
When visiting the Rhine it’s a must to take a boat ride on the Rhine! It’s possible to take the boat ride from multiple cities. We took the boat ride from Boppard and it was a great way to spend a couple of hours and watch the amazing views along the Rhine.
7. Walk over the suspension bridge Geierlay
One the most scary things we did in Germany was walking over the suspension bridge Geierlay. I’m afraid of heights and the suspension bridge is 100 meters above ground, so I thought it was pretty scary, but it was also an amazing experience. The bridge is situated in the forest with views over trees and lakes. The bridge is 360 meters long. It’s quite the walk to bridge, but I think it’s worth the walk!
8. Visit the Black forest
The black forest (or Schwarzwald) is one of Germanys largest mountain and forest areas and there are a lot things to see and do in the Black forrest! There are a lot of small and beautiful towns located by the Black forest, there are hikes and beautiful nature attractions and lots more! You can even see the worlds largest Cuckoo clock in the town Triberg.
9. See the longest waterfall in Germany
In the Black forest you can see Germanys longest waterfall Triberger waterfall. The waterfall is 163 meters long and it’s worth the visit. They have made bridges and stairs along the waterfall so it’s a nice and easy walk. They have even made platforms for you to stand and enjoy the waterfall and snap a photo!
10. Visit Hohenzolleren
Hohenzollern is another one of Germanys beautiful castles! It’s located on top of a small mountain sorrounded by trees.
You need tickets to enter the castle.
Do pay for parking at the castle! We chose not to pay for parking and parked on a free parking spot kind of far from the castle. We walked through the forrest and it was really muddy, the path was narrow and there were a lot of throns. Not a good day to wear white!
11. Visit Liechtenstein castle
Lichtenstein castle is a beautiful castle built on the edge of a 800 meters high cliff. The castle is not quite like Germanys other catles as it’s a gothic looking castle, but it is very beautiful and with the impressive view from the castle it’s actually one of my favorite castles in Germany! You can easily spend a couple of hours there enjoying the castle and the impressive views!
12. Visit Blautopf
If I had to describe Blautopf I would describe it as a fairytale lake. The small lake has this almost magical blue colour. It’s almost looks unreal! The lake is located in a small beautiful town. Perfect for a little stroll around!
13. Take a swim in Alpsee
Alpsee is a beautilful lake located in Bayern. The water is this beautiful blue colour and it’s surrounded with a forrest and mountains.
Take a stroll around the lake and enjoy the beautiful views! If you come in the summer spend a couple of hours enjoying the sun and swim in the lake.
14. Visit Neuschwanstein castle
Neuschwanstein castle is located next to Alpsee and it’s a must see on your Germany bucket list! In my opnion it’s the most beautilful castle in Germany.
Neuschwanstein castle was actually the inspiration to Disneys sleeping beauty castle!
Make sure to visit the viewpoint where you can snap the photo below. It’s really easy to find and there are signs leading up to it.
15. Take a walk through Partnachklamm Gorge
This was one of my favorite things we did in Germany! When you enter Partnach Gorge you are surrounded by massive rocks and you can hear the water rushing through the gorge beneath you. The walk is fairly easy. I think it took us around 30 minutes to walk through Partnach Gorge. The path can be a bit slippery and a bit uneven and sometimes there isn’t much light but I felt totally safe all of the time and the views are amazing!
16. Take a walk around Eibsee
Eibsee is another lake located in Bayern that should be on your bucket list. The views are absolutely amazing and you could easily spend a couple of hours just walkng around and enjoying the views!
17. Visit Bastei bridge
The Bastei is one of Germanys most unique and beautilful landscapes. The Bastai bridge is located above Elbe river and it’s built into rock formations rising to a height of 305 meters. Taking a look at photos of the Bastei bridge it’s clearly to see why the Bastei bridge attracts so many tourist each year!
It’s quite the walk up to the Bastei bridge, but the views are worth the hike!
18. Eat a schnitzel
Eating a schnitzel is a must thing to do in Germany! It’s one of my favorites dishes in Germany. A schnitzel is often served with peas, potatoes and some sauce. And you never have to worry about leaving the table hungry because the schnitzels are always giant!
19. Visit Planten un Blomen
If you visit Hamburg make sure to take a stroll around Planten un Blomen. It’s a beautilful park with lots of beautiful flowers arrangemts, bushes and trees to look at. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the nature.
20. Explore Berlin
You can’t have a Germany bucket list without their capital Berlin. In Berlin there’s a lot of historical sites from world war 2 to see and Berlin has some great shopping centers.
21. Visit a Nazi concentration camp
Visiting a concentreation camp in Germany is a quite unique experience. To see and hear about the terrible things that happend in the camp is a sad but aso interesting experience and I think it should be on everyones bucket list! There’s multiple places in Germany to visit a concentration camp from world war 2.
22. Visit Sylt
Sylt is German Island located far north by the border to Denmark. It’s a small Island with beautilful nature, exclusive shopping and cute villages. Spend one day or a weekend on the Island.
23. Eat a currywurst
So I actually don’t like currywurst, but my husband do and it’s quite a big thing in Germany, so I think it’s a thing you at least have to try!
24. Visit Linderhof
Linderhof is a palace. It’s not quite like some of Germany’s other castles, but I still think it’s worth a visit. Take a stroll around the palace and it’s gardens and enjoy the beautilful view.
25. Buy candy in Germanys supermarkets
So this might be an odd thing to have on a bucket list, but I think it’s just one of those things you just have to do in Germany. Maybe it’s because I’m from Denmark and Germany is our go to country for shopping candy and sodas? Germany has a lot of good candies to try and it’s really cheap in their supermarkets so go explore those supermarkets for fun things to try! Just remeber they are closed on sundays.
